Welcome2Brittany - Breton for English speakers - 08AOBZH2
Breton, a Celtic language like Welsh, Cornish, Irish and Scottish gaelic, has been the traditional language of the western part of Brittany, called Lower Brittany, since around the fifth century AD, when populations emigrated from current Britain to Brittany, called Armorica up to that time.
Having declined from one million speakers at the time of the First World-War to about 100,000 in 2025, Breton is classified as "severely endangered" by the UNESCO. Yet, the number of children attending bilingual Breton-French classes in Britanny as a whole has been constantly rising since 1977 to about 20,000 today.
This ten lesson course will enable you to have a glimpse of the Breton language and culture. By the end of it you will be able to master the basic skills in the language, namely: introduce yourself, talk about your family, your animals, jobs, likes and dislikes, past actions, projects and habits ; and you will have a few notions of the Breton culture.
