Human Centred Design for Interactive Systems: The UX Design Process for Beginners
This course offers a comprehensive and engaging introduction to the User Experience (UX) design process, guiding participants through the full journey of designing digital products, from understanding users to prototyping and testing solutions. Grounded in human-centred design principles, the course also explores the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in UX, highlighting how AI can support key stages of the design process while reinforcing that human empathy, creativity, and critical thinking remain irreplaceable.
The Role of AI in UX Design
A distinctive element of this course is its critical introduction to AI within the design process. Participants will explore how AI can support data analysis and user insights, assist in idea generation and rapid prototyping and improve efficiency and decision-making. At the same time, the course emphasizes that AI assists, but does not replace, the human designer, particularly in relation to empathy, problem framing, and understanding complex human needs.
Participants who successfully complete the final assignment will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance by Neapolis University Pafos.
Course Availability: This course will be active during the Fall and Spring academic semesters of 2026–2027
Application deadlines:
Fall semester: 1 May - 30 September
Spring semester: 1 October - 31 January
Course type: Online short course / Asynchronous learning through recorded lectures, readings, quizzes and self-paced activities
Across the 6 lectures/tutorials, participants will gain a structured understanding of the UX lifecycle, including:
• Empathy & User Research Learn how to uncover user needs, behaviours, and pain points through qualitative and quantitative research methods.
• Problem Definition Translate insights into clear and actionable design problems using techniques such as How Might We statements.
• Ideation Techniques Generate innovative solutions using proven methods such as brainstorming, SCAMPER, and Crazy Eights
• Wireframing & Prototyping Transform ideas into tangible designs, from low-fidelity wireframes to interactive prototypes, guided by usability, information architecture, and UI design principles
• User Testing & Iteration Evaluate designs with real users, gather feedback, and refine solutions through iterative cycles, an essential process for improving usability and user satisfaction
• Introduction to Design Tools (Figma) Build simple, interactive prototypes using industry-standard tools in a beginner-friendly, hands-on environment
The course follows a weekly, structured format, where each week builds directly on the previous one, guiding participants step-by-step through the UX design process. Each week includes:
• Summary Videos: concise recaps to reinforce key concepts and support independent learning.
• Breakout Sessions and Interactive Exercises: collaborative discussions and hands-on activities that enable immediate application of concepts.
• Quizzes & Knowledge Checks: short assessments to consolidate learning and track progress.
This approach ensures that participants actively develop both theoretical understanding and practical skills throughout the course.
By the End of the Course, participants will be able to:
• Apply a complete UX design process from concept to evaluation
• Design solutions grounded in real user needs
• Create wireframes and interactive prototypes
• Conduct effective user testing and interpret feedback
• Understand how AI can support, yet not replace, UX design practice
